Purpose of the Position General

The Project Leader leads the research and development activities from early discovery to selection of drug candidates and IND filing. The Project Leader leads interdisciplinary teams to define the project discovery and development strategy in line with company vision, medical, regulatory and commercial needs, develop plans, and align the organization for the flawless execution of the plans. The Project Leader may lead multiple projects simultaneously depending on the stage of the projects.


In line with the above and for this particular position, the Project Leader will be mainly involved in leading several collaborative discovery projects, and in particular in ensuring efficient and successful delivery on the goals for each project in collaboration with external partners. This includes working with the Ablynx Senior Project Leader and lead scientists to finalize and update work plans as required, to lead and guide the interdisciplinary core team and to help align the organization for the execution of a portfolio of projects in line with agreed goals and timelines agreed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading strategic and operational aspects of specific projects in the portfolio:
  • identifying the different scientific challenges from project inception to NDC and with oversight of the approved work plans, being able to identify and propose solutions
  • working with Ablynx lead scientists and project planners in finalization of work plans, defining the activities required to deliver Nanobodies fulfilling project requirements, including reaching agreement on proposed timelines and Ablynx FTEs required
  • presenting the status vs plans and FTE summaries to the Ablynx core team (and governance bodies when relevant), identifying variances and addressing these as necessary
  • supporting successful execution of the approved work plans, by aligning with lead scientists and within departments, by providing information to help manage relevant stakeholders, by identifying issues impacting the strategies and plans, by monitoring the approved budget (external costs and internal resources) and pro-actively monitoring the critical path of the projects across the portfolio
  • supporting alliance manager and project planners in preparation of budgeting and resource forecasting efforts for specific projects for internal forecasting efforts and for regular update to and invoicing the external collaborators
  • Expertise
  • Has or is able to rapidly develop a good understanding of the Nanobody platform, the science behind the platform and a sound knowledge of the R&D process at Ablynx
  • Has a sound knowledge of drug development and of project planning and project management, or is willing and able to acquire that knowledge rapidly
  • Has or is able to rapidly develop a high-level knowledge of the disease, targets, clinical market, competition and IP landscape within the context of one or more projects
  • People management
  • Leading team members to ensure an optimal and smooth functioning of the lead scientists, project teams, CMC activities and Pharma support
  • Resolving any conflicts within the core team
  • Managing key stakeholders by providing key information on portfolio status, portfolio planning and resource utilization (actuals vs planned)
  • Communication
  • Chairing internal core team meetings, helping to organize Teleconferences and JPT/JRC meetings and supporting effective project related communications
  • Supporting effective and timely communication and information flows between the different core team members, line managers, senior management and external partners
  • Supporting the preparation and presentations by core team members of the project deliverables and progress at the different gates
  • Supporting the alliance manager to ensure strong management of the relationship with our collaborators, providing information enabling effective negotiation, reporting and communication

Minimum Qualifications
  • Expected educational qualifications: advanced degree, such as PhD, MSc
  • Expected experience: 2-5 years of relevant industrial experience
  • MS Office and project management tools: proficient level
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken
